Registering with the USW Health Service and a Local Doctor

Register with the USW Health Service at the start of term to speed up access to healthcare if you get ill.
If you’re living in a new area for the first time you should also register with a local doctor (GP).

September 2018: All students should complete the new Health Service / doctor registration form in Advice Zone Online to activate their digital USW medical record before attempting to book an appointment.

Cardiff Area

Students living in this area can access the USW Health Service on Atrium Campus. You will need to register with a doctor independently. Please do the following two things:

1) Register Online

Register with the USW Health Service using Advice Zone Online:
Advice Zone Online: register with the health service.

2) Find a local doctor and register with them

Use Health in Wales to find the nearest surgery to your term time address and ask to register. You’ll need your NHS number, the name and address of your previous GP, proof of identity and a utility bill for your new address. You can find your NHS number on your medical card, repeat prescriptions or any hospital letter you may have.

Newport Area

Students living in this area can access the USW Health Service on Newport Campus. We also have close links to Bellevue Group Practice. To get full access you need to do two things:

1) Register Online

Register with the USW Health Service using Advice Zone Online:
Advice Zone Online: register with the health service.

2) Register In-Person

You need to attend an in-person session to complete paperwork required to register with the doctor.

If you live at CLV Newport Student Village please attend one of the two registration sessions at Clv:

  • Thursday 20th Sept 2018, 3pm – 5pm.
  • Tuesday 25th Sept 2018, 3pm – 5pm.

Otherwise, book an appointment with a nurse at USW Health Service to complete the registration for Bellevue surgery.

Treforest, Glyntaff and Pontypridd Area

Students living in this area can access the USW Health Service on Treforest Campus. Additionaly a local doctors (Ashgrove Surgery) runs regular doctor appointments on campus at the Health Service. You need to do two things:

1) Register Online

Register with the USW Health Service using Advice Zone Online:
Advice Zone Online: register with the health service.

Make sure you complete the section about registering with a doctor.

2) Register In-Person

You need to attend an in-person session to complete paperwork required to register with the doctor. For the start of term 2018-19 in-person registration sessions are being held in the “Glass room” in J block (Johnstown building) at the following times:

  • Tuesday September 25th, 9am – midday
  • Weds September 26th, 1pm – 4pm
  • Thurs September 27th 10am – 1pm
  • Mon 1st Oct 10am – 1pm
  • Weds 3rd Oct 11am – 2pm

If you can’t attend any of those sessions, make an appointment via Advice Zone Online with a nurse to complete the registration process.
