Contraception Clinic

Free contraception is available to all women in Wales from local Family Planning Clinics. Those students who live on campus in halls or in Treforest / Pontypridd area and are registered with Ashgrove surgery can obtain various types of contraception at the University Health Centre Treforest campus

The following types of contraception will be available by appointment with the GP

Contraceptive Implant (Implanon)– a small plastic tube inserted under the skin which releases the hormone progesterone. No need to worry about contraception as once in place it works for 3 years. It can be taken out at any time and fertility will return to normal after removal. Does NOT protect you from sexually transmitted infections:

Contraceptive injection – lasts for 12 weeks, cannot be removed from the body so any side effects may continue. Periods may stop all together or can become irregular. Does NOT protect you from sexually transmitted infections.

Contraceptive Pill – 2 types – need to see GP initially then subsequent repeat prescriptions can be ordered 6 monthly with the USW Nurse. The pill does NOT protect you from sexually transmitted infections.
Combined – 2 hormones often reduces bleeding, period pain and pre menstrual tension. NOT suitable for smokers over 35 or increased BMI’s. Some medication can make it less effective, such as antibiotics as does vomiting and diarrhoea.
Progesterone only – 1 hormone, suitable for smokers and women over 35.Periods may stop or become irregular, when stopped fertility usually returns to normal. Needs to be taken at the same time every day.

Condoms – These will protect you from most STI’s . The USW Health Service is part of the FREE C-Card Scheme and is available to students under the age of 25. Register at the H/C and get your condoms FREE. You DO NOT need to see the GP to be able to get free condoms. The Scheme is also available at Newport City Campus and in the Newport Student Village.

To discuss any of the above or make an appointment contact the H/C to speak with a Nurse.
